After five years as the North American Ice Optimist Program Director, Ron Rosten has handed over the tiller. Thank you, Ron, for your service to the class. Please welcome our new Junior Secretary, Erin Bury US5397, of Minneapolis, MN. Erin, who grew up sailing, brings her experience as a youth coach. Erin came to us with an idea about establishing an Ice Optimist training camp near Lakeville, MN. Her enthusiasm for the project made her a perfect candidate for the role of North American Ice Optimist Program Director.
I grew up sailing a 1984 Freedom 21 on Lake Superior along with scows on Lake Minnetonka. I currently crew on a Nacra F-18 Infusion MKIII and a J70 on Lake Minnetonka, where I race at least three days a week in spring, summer, and fall.
I have been a head swim coach for high school and club for the last eight years. I built a self-sustaining non-profit aquatics’ program from the ground up over five years. After that, I moved into a full-time role (my current occupation) as the Senior Coordinator of Aquatics at the YMCA. As the Senior Coordinator, I grow current aquatic programming and develop new programs as we expand.
My goals as the North American Junior Secretary include:
1) Create more sailing opportunities for a broader range of demographics and engage our communities in unique ways.
2) Empower young women AND men.
3) Share the love of ice sailing and grow the sport in inclusive and equitable ways.
I’m also excited to announce that I’m seeking a partnership with the YMCA to start an official North American youth ice sailing program.
Currently, I am building a proposal for the YMCA and have thus far secured REI as our first sponsor!
Have ideas for this initiative? Don’t be shy! Feel free to reach out with any questions and/or suggestions!
I can’t wait to work with you all!
