Sailed on March 16-17, 1996 on Lake St. Louis in Beaconfields PQ, Canada in terrific sunny Montreal.
Ice Condition: 85% lightly rutted black ice with patches of lightly crusted 1-2" drifts. Soften on 3/16. Hard and rough on 3/17 not quite smooth enough to be really fast with light steady wind. Small drain holes were scattered across the course and were marked when found. Peter Ashley the resident solar engineer came up with a balloon and popsicle stick marking system that lasted two days. Balloons littered the course. A very effective marking system aided pilots in avoiding the known drain holes none of which were more than 12" wide by 36" long.
On 3/16 in the 2nd race Paul Gervais put a runner through an iced drain hole and was injured when he crashed the boat. He left the course and was treated at a local clinic and went back to Burlington. Last report is that he is better and had no broken bones but is VERY sore and may have a cracked cheek bone. He plans on returning to the course soon.
Racing was postponed for the rest of the afternoon and the course was combed for more drain holes and holes were marked as they were found. Racing started early on 3/17 and was completed by 1:30. Seven races were run two Saturday and 5 Sunday with one throw out race for six races being scored.
Weather: Clear and Sunny both days. Temp 17/36 on 3/16 and 16/36 on 3/17. Winds: 8-14 knots with 20 degree shifts
Course length: 1-1/4 mile 3/16, 1 mile 3/17
