DNIYC of Detroit
3rd Race
March 4, 2001
Cass Lake, Michigan
The third day of racing for the DNIYC of Detroit club was held on Cass
Lake. The lake was covered in 10-12 inches of 60% snow ice and 40% honeycombed
dark ice. Overnight the temperatures were low enough for the ice to start
out hard and fast. Unfortunately, the wind started out light, and decreased
as the morning wore on.
By the start time of the first race (12pm) the wind had died and the
ice softened to the point where we couldn't race. After much standing
on the ice and telling each other what a cool sport we have, the wind
finally started to pick up. We sailed a couple of one-lap practice races
in very light...holy...shifty wind, then the breeze finally settled down
to North at 10-15 knots..
Even though the ice had softened up considerably, there was anough wind
to get around the course. All sorts of runners were in being used, and
the ones that worked the best were 3/16" inserts, minumum T's, 1/4"
T's, and angles. No one type of runner worked really well all the time,
and there were lots of theories as to how a minimum T could work at all!
It was actually very enjoyable sailing, in a Cass Lake sort of way.
