2003 GTIYC Fun RegattaMarch 1-2, 2003 This year's Fun Regatta was held on West Grand Traverse Bay. The Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club spent the week testing the local ice and had a venue picked out right in front of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club. We had a nice piece of ice with 1-1/2" of fairly new snow in a uniform cover. The temperature on Saturday was nice, getting up to around 40 deg in the afternoon. The forecast was for 5-10 mph winds, but by the time the boats were set up people were hiking and the stage was set for another Fun Regatta. We had 33 DN's split into a 13 boat A fleet and a 20 boat B fleet, and 16 boats in the the mixed class C fleet. The Race Committee decided to run 2 lap races in the light wind to insure we had a good number of races for each fleet. The racing was great fun, with light shifty wind that was just consistent enough to allow sailors to complete races in all fleets. Racing at the top of A fleet was very exciting as Jan Gougeon schooled the fleet in the early races with a series of horizon jobs. But, the pack of wolves following Jan must have been good students because Jan had some stiff competition in the afternoon. The Detroit Ice Yacht Club made a repeat of their show at the Worlds by bringing the barbecue to the race course and making sure the sailors didn't collapse from starvation. The only thing lacking was a supply of beverages to wash down the food. Next time... Dick and Julie supplied the usual fine grub back at the pits, and once again sailors ended the day with full bellies and tales of a great day of racing. On Sunday morning the wind was over 25 mph and the temperature was 9 degrees, then dropped to 7 degrees by 10 am, headed towards a 0 degree forecast for the afternoon.. This signaled the end of the regatta, but with 5 races per fleet on Saturday everyone agreed the regatta was a success. Once again the Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club set the pace for other regattas to follow. I'm already looking forward to next years Fun Regetta.
