GTIYC Fun Regatta

This years Fun Regatta, as always hosted by the Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club, was another
great event. After postponing the regatta due to generally lousy iceboating conditions this year,
Houghton Lake shaped up and provided some fantastic late season conditions.
Sixty sailors registered for the regatta, with 34 DN's divided into Gold and Silver fleets, and another
26 mixed class iceboats in the "all other" Bronze fleet, made up of J-14s, C-class Skeeters, DNs,
and other assorted craft. Because of the large course and smallish fleet size, the Gold and Silver
fleets sailed together in one fleet and split later.
The ice conditions allowed for a long course, with one marked hole (well off the course) and one
working seam which had to be crossed to get to the course which was about two miles from the
launch site. Both Saturday and Sunday had high
winds, with the usual consequences - some broken equipment and a fair number of sailors who
decided to stay on the sidelines and watch.
Matt Struble dominated the Gold fleet, with a full string of bullets. This left John Harper, Jan Gougeon,
and Bruce Williams to wage battle for runner-up. Dick Wollam turned in some solid results to win the
Silver Fleet, and would likely have won even if the bulk of the Silver Fleet had not decided they had
enough after Saturday's racing. The Bronze Fleet had some pretty close battles among the top four
boats, but Chris Stauber held off his competition to bring home the top prize.
The sailing was topped off by the usual GTIYC hospitality and an excellent barbeque
provided at the end of the day by Dick Wollam. Thanks also have to go out to the race committee,
with Loretta Rehe and a host of helpers keeping things running smoothly (sorry, I wasn't actually at
the starting line to see who helped).
