2008 IDNIYRA North American Championship
January 14 - 18, 2008
Lake Pepin
Lake City, Minnesota
The 2008 North American Championship moved to Lake Pepin
on the Mississippi River after a last minute snow fall covered the
perfect ice at the primary venue, Lake Winnebago. Ninety-eight sailors
made the long drive to the land of bald eagles to participate in a
great regatta.
The initial launch site at Lake Pepin provided a good opportunity for
practice. The ice was rough - "very rumbly" is how the ice checkers put
it, but by the end of the day smoother ice was discovered just a short
sail North on the river. Actually, the five mile iceboat cruise on the
Mississippi at the end of the day was truly a pleasure.
The first day of racing was cold and windy, with winds 15-20 MPH
and gusts to 25. The day's high temp was 14 defF, dropping in the
afternoon to a bone-chilling 8 degF when we left the ice. The ice was
not perfect, with a mixture of smooth patches, rumbly
ice, occasional bumps big enough to send a runner flying, and
some large deep powdery snow drifts. The wind let up a bit in the
afternoon to 12-15 MPH, but built back up to butt pucker level by the
end of the day. The Race Committee
kept things moving and was able to get in 4 races in each fleet by the
end of the first day, which ended with a color show as the setting sun
lit the rocky bluffs of the Mississippi.
The second day started out with really cold temperatures and no wind.
Luckily the temperature came up quickly as the sun rose in the sky, and
the wind picked up along with the temps. The Race Committee completed 3
more
races in each fleet by early afternoon, with increasing winds keeping
the excitement level high.
Matt Struble sailed an excellent series of races, with a
string of
"horizon jobs", mixed in with occasional battles with the other top
sailors. I
can't wait for the day when I can win a regatta by throwing out a 4th
place to win with all bullets - well done Matt.
John Dennis and Ron Sherry sailed a fierce series of races, with only
two points separating them at the finish. Jim Hadley was a real
standout until a collision in the 5th race dampened his spirits. Jim
has really progressed over the last couple years and I hope to see him
at the front of the pack in future regattas.
To say the sailing was exciting is an understatement.
The course was a
little short at 3/4 mile, and there was plenty of wind (at least half
the races had wind of 15 MPH or more). Fast bumpy ice and lots of
spinouts downwind made for a high "pucker factor". I'm sure
some sailors in
the pits heard me hoootin' and hollerin' on the downwind legs.
In my mind these were two great days of racing and is the
stuff that keeps me coming back for more.
"Hat's off" to the Race Committee for another super job
on the ice. RC Chairman Bill VanGee and his crew from New
York (John and Pat Perrin, John Atkins, and Jeff Robertson) did their
usual fine job. Loretta Rehe handled scoring with help from
Maria LeBeau, Mari Lambrecht, John and Pat Perrin, and Jeff
Robertson.
